This is also called Subject-Verb Agreement in English. However, because English has more exceptions to its rules than any other language, you also need to know the exceptions to this rule. On exception to the above example is when the main verb has one of the following helping verbs along with it: can, could; will, would; do, does; did; shall, should; may, might. This rule of subject-verb agreement and its exceptions does not exist in Kriol nor in many other languages. However, in English, you need to choose which is the correct form of the verb to use.

English [for emphasis]:          Tom does walk to class.
Kriol [for emphasis]:              Taam waak da klaas fu chroo fu chroo.

BUT IT IS WRONG TO SAY:  Tom does walks to class.

Kriol is the language spoken by many Belizeans, especially the Creole people of Belize. Although it is often perceived as a dialect of English, it is indeed it's own language with grammar and spelling rules. The National Kriol Council of Belize was created to promote the culture and language of the Kriol people of Belize, as well as harmony among all the ethnic groups of Belize. Please visit the website of the National Kriol Council of Belize for lots of good information about the Kriol language and the Creole people.

The Kriol Council has been kind enough to send us the weekly "Weh Wi Ga Fi Seh" column that is usually published in the Reporter.

Check back weekly for new articles.
