Noh Figet: Di Vairos Stil Deh Bowt... Stay Sayf!

Kriol: Ah memba wen "Corona" da-mi da nais byaa fahn Meksiko weh yu jrink wit wahn lee pees a laim. Ahn wen Ah doz hyaa "virus,"  Ah yoostu tink bowt mi kompoota, if mi Norton er Bitdefender anti-vairos mi dehn tu taim!

English: I memba when "Corona" was a nice beer from Mexico; you’d drink with a piece of lime along with your mate. And when I used to hear "virus," my mind would flash to computers, wondering if my Norton or Bitdefender was up-to-date.

Kriol: Ah memba wen "flatten di curve" doz rifer tu mee di chrai rijoos mi beli saiz, soh dat Ah ku si di kerv a fi mee ways! Ah memba wen "di surge di come" yoostu rifer tu di taidal staam serj (noh main ih stil meen dat wans Joon harikayn seazn kohn rong!). Ah memba wen di oanli "peak" mee mi noa bowt da-mi "Victoria Peak"; now, wi aal di wayt fi dis vairos reech ih peek!

English: I memba when "flatten di curve" used to refer to me trying to reduce my belly size, so that I could see di curve of my waist! And when "di surge di come" used to refer only to tidal storm surge (which of course it still will as hurricane season begins post haste!) I memba when di only "peak" I used to talk about was Victoria Peak; now, we are all waiting for this virus to reach its peak!

Kriol:Wat a ting—dis koroanavairos bizniz! Taim fi hib ahn lang shoa! Mikays weel ahn ton agen, 2020—Ah di shoa yu di doa!

English: What a thing—this coronavirus business! Time to pitch it to shore! Wheel and turn again, 2020—di world is ready to show you di door!

Protek yuself... Protek yu fren ahn faamli.

Kriol is the language spoken by many Belizeans, especially the Creole people of Belize. Although it is often perceived as a dialect of English, it is indeed it's own language with grammar and spelling rules. The National Kriol Council of Belize was created to promote the culture and language of the Kriol people of Belize, as well as harmony among all the ethnic groups of Belize. Please visit the website of the National Kriol Council of Belize for lots of good information about the Kriol language and the Creole people.

The Kriol Council has been kind enough to send us the weekly "Weh Wi Ga Fi Seh" column that is usually published in the Reporter.

Check back weekly for new articles.
